Volcanoes form when magma rises from deep within the Earth, breaking through the crust. When it reaches the surface, we call it lava. Over many eruptions, the lava cools and hardens into rock, building the mountain higher over time.

You know how when you shake a soda bottle really hard and then open it, it explodes? That's kind of what a volcano is. There's hot melty rock under the ground getting shaken up by pressure until it has to come out.
